A quanto pare l’estate non porta grandi successi per Mozilla Foundation: a giorni vedrà la luce una nuova versione della ripudiata Mozilla Suite.

Stamattina il corriere mi ha consegnato il pacco del MAPS; oltre ad una serie interminabile di cd, la scatola contiene abbondante materiale commerciale sotto forma di cd e brochure.

Appena avrò un attimo di tempo ho intenzione di installare Windows2003 Server Small Business Premium sul server di backup casalingo, sostituendo Gentoo che attualmente fa solo da file server.

Disponibile in italiano la versione 1.0.6 di Firefox; per il download andate sul sito di Mozilla Italia oppure su SourceForge.

Per Thunderbird 1.0.6 in italiano bisognerà attendere qualche giorno.

Non uscirà una versione in italiano ufficiale della versione 1.0.5 dal momento che la settimana prossima è prevista l’uscita della versione 1.0.6

You are correct. We received feedback on 1.0.5 from distributors and extension developers on API changes that affected them (not a security issue), so we’re looking at a 1.0.6 to fix it. We will have builds of a 1.0.6 to test tomorrow morning and will hope to complete certification by Monday. We will provide status in this bug.

Riassumento: non si tratta di problemi di sicurezza, ma del fatto che molte estensioni vanno a pallino.

And I hope that with 1.0.6 you will not release 1.0.6 en-US first, wait for feedback and THEN l10n builds. We strongly prefer to have the very same build as en-US have.

Come se non bastasse il numero da circo eseguito per Firefox 1.0.5, Mozilla Foundation ha deciso di concedere gentilmente un bis con Thunderbird 1.0.5.

We’ve run into an issue where an API change was introduced into the 1.0.5 builds which is going to require that we replace 1.0.5 with a new release. Please hold off on doing any further localizations until we have the new release ready to go. If all goes well, this should be on Monday.

L’autore di questo messaggio sulla mailing-list l10n è Asa Dotzler, ma non c’è traccia del problema nel suo blog: come dire, tutto rose e fiori per il mondo esterno.

Esce Firefox 1.0.5 e purtroppo Mozilla non perde il vizio.

Le build italiane sono pronte e testate da tempo, sia per la versione 1.0.5 che per la futura 1.1; nonostante questo, Mozilla ha deciso di rilasciare solo la build 1.0.5 in inglese, relegando in un angolino tutte le versioni localizzate.

La risposta assurda di mozilla.org alla richiesta di chiarimenti è stata:

We’re currently evaluating the feedback we’re getting on the en-US builds and seeing if they will affect the localizations. That’s why you’re not seeing localized builds on the web site just yet.

Sinceramente non posso che quotare in toto il commento di uno dei localizzatori:

I must say that this new policy is very destructive for our local markets. We’re more than 2 days after 1.0.5 release and l10n builds still are not released. We gather very bad press, we’re blamed by users, we have no reason to explain this, we don’t know how to explain this to journalists who’re asking about this issue.
We moved to centralized localization system to make l10n release easier and more stable. Such changes makes it absolutely pointless because we would be able to provide localized build by ourselves MUCH faster. Tens of milions of users are still using 1.0.4 while critical, security bugs are already published after en-US 1.0.5 release. I want to say that this seems to be absolutely ignored by Mozilla Foundation and by such delays you waste huge amount of work l10n teams are doing to promote our brands on local markets.

Come al solito ci sono idioti che non hanno di meglio da fare che scrivere commenti su ZioBudda.net o Punto Informatico: se non gradite la traduzione di Firefox, date una mano invece di parlare a vanvera!

Ancora una volta scarsa attenzione di Mozilla al gruppo l10n e tutto ciò che non è USA.
